Study Abroad Program Description
Offering Spanish language and culture courses for the beginning through advanced levels, as well as elective courses taught in English, this program is ideal for students who want to improve their Spanish while fulfilling their general education and elective requirements abroad. You will complete a placement test upon arrival in Málaga to confirm your language level and Spanish courses. You will enroll in 4- 5 courses per semester.
All courses are held at the University of Málaga's Centro Internacional de Español and are taught by host university faculty. Program participants will benefit from small class sizes. Beginning and intermediate level Spanish classes are held with international students while advanced Spanish and courses in English are held with ISA students only.
Students may choose to incorporate an Intensive Month program before or after this program for an additional cost. Please refer to the Intensive Month program section of the website for more information and to ensure that the program dates will align.
Gap students are also eligible for this program.

Housing
Living in ISA housing will give you the opportunity to experience aspects of the Spanish lifestyle that are inaccessible to the average visitor. Uncovering the uniqueness of your neighborhood and the surrounding areas will help you to feel right at home. No matter which type of housing you choose, you will have a short commute to class. Travel times to the various university buildings generally range between 15 and 40 minutes depending on housing and class locations. With an open and adaptable mind, the experience of living in another culture can be highly rewarding.
We strive to match your housing preferences with our available accommodations, however, housing requests cannot be guaranteed.
Homestay
Homestays are best if you are seeking full linguistic and cultural immersion during your time abroad. Each host family has been carefully selected by ISA's resident staff in order to best accommodate your needs and to ensure a comfortable living situation. Homestays will provide three meals a day (except on ISA excursion days) and laundry service once a week. You will typically share a room with another ISA student of the same gender. Single rooms may be available for an additional fee.
Student Residence
The student residence (residencia in Spanish) is similar to a small dorm and is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The residencia houses Spanish and international students, giving you the opportunity to meet Spaniards and practice your language skills. Please note that the residencia is a private business and does not have a direct affiliation with the University of Málaga. Three meals per day are included (with some exceptions) as well as laundry service once per week. Students usually share a room with another ISA student but have the option of paying extra to secure an individual room. This option is only available for semester or year program students. A $500 refundable housing deposit and a $100 per month surcharge is required for this option. ISA may retain some, or all, of the housing deposit in the case of damage to property.
Independent Housing
You may elect to secure housing independently. If you select this option, you will receive a discount equal to the housing portion of the program price.
Excursions
THERE’S MORE TO DISCOVER WITH ISA
Granada
Granada is a picturesque and mountainous university town. It has always been a multicultural city and was the last Moorish stronghold during the Catholic reconquest of Spain. You will explore Granada’s multicultural past through visits to historic neighborhoods like the Albaicín and Realejo. During an unforgettable evening flamenco show, you will have the chance to soak up Spanish music and culture. You will also visit important cultural sites including the Alhambra fortress, Spain’s most popular tourist attraction.
Seville & Córdoba
On this overnight excursion, you will tour the famous Mezquita in Córdoba, a 10th-century mosque that curiously houses a 16th-century cathedral. You will explore the historic Jewish quarter and visit one of three original synagogues remaining in Spain. Córdoba was once home to Romans, Muslims, Christians and Jews, each leaving imprints that you will be able to identify by the time you leave.
Barcelona
During the weekend that you will be in Barcelona, Spain's most cosmopolitan city and one of Europe's top destinations for tourism, culture and commerce, you will explore the medieval part of Barcelona such as the Gothic Quarter and the bohemian El Born district, as well as the emblematic monuments such as Park Güell, Casa Batilló, and La Sagrada Familia.
Cultural activities in Málaga
The ISA on-site team encourages you to explore the city and culture of Málaga. The team facilitates this by offering a robust calendar of events that showcases what makes Málaga special.
These activities vary each term, and previous offerings have included visiting the Alcazaba, taking a boat ride around the Málaga Bay, taking a cooking class, and wine tasting.
